Can Women Have It All? Read This Interview!

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

The following article was originally published in the Atlantic magazine. The article discussed balancing a career and motherhood and drew nearly a million views online and sparked a tremendous debate about the role of women in the work force.

The article is titled “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All” and was written by Anne-Marie Slaughter. In the following interview, Judy Woodruff talks to Princeton Professor Anne-Marie Slaughter about the topic. Click HERE to view the original article on PBS.ORG.

Anne-Marie Slaughter, to you first. What do you mean by having it all?
ANNE-MARIE SLAUGHTER, Princeton University: I mean that women should be able to have the same choices as men.
I think I regret that that's the way the issue has always been formulated when I was coming of age. I think, today, it sounds very entitled because there are so many Americans who have very, very little. But really what it means is that women should be able to have the same choices about being able to have a family and being able to have a career that men do.
JUDY WOODRUFF: And you write that for the longest time you believed that that was the case, but now you don't. Why not?
ANNE-MARIE SLAUGHTER: Well, no, I still do believe that women can have it all.
But I now understand that my ability to have it all, which I have always been able to have, was a function of how flexible my job is as a tenured professor. I have had a lot of flexibility about when I work. I work incredibly hard. I certainly put in the same kinds of hours that anybody else does at a very high level. But I have flexibility.
And the minute I got myself into a job that is the kind of job that the vast, vast majority of working women have, where I was on somebody else's schedule and really had a boss, a boss I adore, Hillary Clinton, but I realized I couldn't make it work with my family.
And that's when I really decided that it's time to have another round of conversation and make another round of changes that will allow both women, working mothers and fully engaged fathers to have better choices.
JUDY WOODRUFF: And just quickly, what are one or two of those changes that you think must be made?
ANNE-MARIE SLAUGHTER: Well, the simplest changes are around allowing more flexibility in the workplace, allowing women to be able to, say, work one day from home, and again working fathers as well. I mean, given technology, that's really quite possible.
Changes that, for instance, value the results out rather than hours in, and changes that say, you know, working until midnight, being in the office -- this isn't about working, but the culture of face time in the office and the culture of what I call time macho, you know, the person who is there until midnight in the office must be the person who is working the hardest, those are culture changes that we can make if we just think about them differently.

It seems as if Facebook is the root to many divorces around the world! Justices are now beginning to get wise and using evidence on Facebook during divorce hearings.

According to a survey done last year, more than a third of divorce filings in the UK contained the word “Facebook”. Another survey done in the United States reported that 80% of divorce attorneys said they’ve seen the number of cases using social networking on the rise.

A divorce attorney Connecticut also added that out of the 15 cases he handles per year that computer history, texts and emails are used as evidence, 60% exclusively involve Facebook!

Australian Swimmers Banned From Using Social Media During London Olympics

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

Two Australian swimmers will be unable to use Social Media during this summer’s Olympics in London. The two swimmers, Nick D’Arcy and Kenrick Monk angered Australia’s Olympic Committee (AOC) after posting photos of themselves with guns on their social media accounts earlier last week.

The AOC believes that the actions of the two swimmers were foolish and they were advised to take the photos down immediately. D’Arcy and Monk also agreed to returning home to Australia immediately after the games finish in London which begins next month.

It appears that this is strike two for swimmer D’Arcy. D’Arcy assaulted Australian triple Commonwealth games gold medalist Simon Cowley and this resulted in him being kicked off of the Beijing Olympic team in 2008.

The AOC believes that social media will serve as a distraction for the two swimmers during the London games. AOC believes that during the games, the swimmers focus should be on swimming and competing.

What are your thoughts on the situation? Let us know on Stober Laws Facebook page linked HERE

Tips To Follow After A Car Accident

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

If you’ve ever unfortunately been in a car accident, you know that it can be an extremely stressful time post-accident.  Here is some advice from the attorneys at the Law Offices of Louis D. Stober, Jr., L.L.C., on important steps to take after acar accident.

  1. Immediately after the crash check to see if anyone in either vehicle requires medical assistance. Perform first aid or call an ambulance.
  2. If the vehicles are blocking the roadway or highway, and can be moved, they should be moved to a safe position. If not, someone should warn approaching traffic and keep people from wandering in the paths of oncoming cars.
  3. Call 911 for the police or highway patrol immediately.
  4. Get contact information for any witnesses.
  5. Exchange insurance information and drivers' license numbers with other drivers involved in the car accident.
  6. If there is a camera or cell phone camera available, begin taking pictures of all sides of the vehicles, of the scene of the accident, and of injuries.
After the accident:
  1. If you or any member of your family has been injured, get medical care. Even a mild closed head injury may result in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Follow all of your medical provider's instructions.
  2. Notify your auto insurance provider of the accident, but do not make a statement to an insurance company representative or sign a settlement form before talking to an attorney.
  3. Get a copy of the police report.
  4. Continue to take pictures of your injuries throughout the course of healing.
  5. Have your car accident claim reviewed by a personal injury lawyer familiar with New York State law and see that you are being treated fairly by your insurance company.
