Children’s Internet Safety for Parents!

The Internet is a wide open world. Today with Wi-Fi and smart phones, it is accessible from just about everywhere. While the Internet contains many forms of information and entertainment, a darker side exists.

This dark side unfortunately puts children and adolescents at risk.
Children and adolescents are curious and the Internet gives them the freedom to explore their curiosity. This curiosity could and most likely leads to them contacting other people. Chat rooms, Instant Messaging, and Message Boards give our children the opportunity to participate in a community of sorts, an on-line community. A problem that may arise is that, not everyone on-line is actually who they say they are. Children and adolescents must watch out for computer-sex offenders.

Children may not initially recognize the dangers of contacting others online. They may be attracted to the potential offender because they are closer in age, or feel that the person they are talking to doesn’t fit the profile of a sex offender. But, they must be instructed by their parents that it is not something they should do.

Signs that your child may be at risk on-line:
  • Your child spends a large amount of time on-line (especially at night, when there is greater risk).
  • You find pornography on your child’s computer.
  • Your child receives phone calls from unknown adults.
  • Your child receives items or packages from unknown senders through the U.S. mail.
  • Your child quickly turns off their computer monitor when you enter the room.
  • Your child becomes withdrawn from your family.
  • Your child is using someone else’s on-line account.
What should you do if you suspect your child is communicating with a sexual predator online?
  • Talk openly with your child and explain the dangers of computer-sex offenders.
  • Review what is actually on your child’s computer (browser history, downloads, etc.)
  • Use Caller ID and block suspicious phone numbers.
  • Monitor your child’s access to live electronic communications such as; Chat Rooms, Instant Messages, Internet Relay Chat, etc.
What can be done to minimize the chances of an on-line exploiter victimizing your child?
  • Communicate the potential of online danger and sexual victimization to your child.
  • Go on-line with your child and learn their favorite websites.
  • Keep the computer in a common room, not their bedroom.
  • Use parent controls. There is software that can both block access to certain sites and monitor what sites your child visits when you are not there.
  • Always know your child’s accounts and passwords. Check their e-mail from time to time.
  • Teach your child responsibly of on-line use.
  • Research what security and safeguards are used in school, the library, the homes of your child’s friends, as well as anywhere else your child may visit that has Internet access.
Instruction tips to give your children:
  • Never physically meet someone they met on-line.
  • Do not upload or post photographs of them.
  • Never give out their name, address, school, or phone number.
  • Never download pictures from an unknown source.
  • Never post responses on suggestive or obscene message boards.
  • Make them aware that not everything they read on-line is true.
Always remember that your child is not at fault and is the victim if a situation arises. More detailed information, including; FAQs and common Internet definitions can be accesses HERE, on the FBI – Parent Guide to Internet Safety.

Back to School Safety Tips!

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530

It’s back to school time for most children and sometimes unfortunate events occur. Accidents on school grounds happen, but there are step that can be taken by you, the parents or guardians, that can help prevent accidents from happening.

Some tips to help prevent accidents from occurring include:

  • Talking to your children’s teachers and school staff about supervision
  • Checking the school grounds yourself to make sure it is safe and setting boundaries for your children if need be.
  • Know your children’s schedule; when they will be home, after school activities, etc.Know who they will be with, when they will be coming home, or if there will be adult supervision
  • Attend PTA meetings. Voice your concerns and work to keep the school ground safe if there is an issue.
  • Speak to your children. It sounds simple, but if you know what is going on in their everyday life; who their friends are, what activities they do after school, etc. you will have a better understanding what boundaries you can set to keep them safe.
Accidents on School Grounds are an unfortunate event, but some research into your child’s school life can help prevent an injury from happening.

Current employees at the Garden City Hotel may all be facing layoffs this week. The hotel was recently sold to a Manhattan real-estate group who plans to layoff its entire staff. In an email sent to employees this week, it stated that some will be re-employed.

Patrick S. Smalley, the hotels vice president and managing director told employees in an email that the new ownership changeover is expected to happen this week. He also told employees when the management changeover occurs; they will be receiving a termination letter. It has been reported that the hotel employs about 300 people.

Smalley stated that the layoffs were a necessary part of the transition into new management. He also said that, “It requires the termination of all employees before new ownership can extend offers of employment to them. It is a difficult process to navigate, and we have taken every precaution to carry it out in the most dignified way for every employee.”

Garden City is Enforcing Traffic Safety in School Zones!

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

With school back in session, there is no better time for a reminder on safety in school zones. The Village of Garden City is one of many villages that want to enforce safety in effort to keep their children safe and accident incidents low.

One area in Garden City that residents worry about is the intersection of Merillon Avenue and Rockaway Avenue. Recently, the Traffic Commission decided to suggest to the Garden City Board of Trustees to direct the Garden City Police Department to increase police enforcement of the speed limit, which is normally 30 but 20 mph when school is in session. They also recommended that blinking lights be installed to draw attention to the speed limit sign.

Residents of Garden City signed a peti- tion that was submitted to Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, Nassau County Commissioner of Public Works Shila Shah-Gavnoudias, P.E., along with various officials in the Village of Garden City and the Garden City School District.

Residents asked that one of the following remedies be applied near the east entrances to Garden City High School on Rockaway Avenue: a crosswalk, a stop sign or other prominent caution sign(s), a no parking sign on the east side of Rockaway across from the school, and enhanced police enforcement. (www.gcnews.com)

Garden City Police will be strictly enforcing the speed limit in this area, especially during school hours. Please be careful on the road and join in the effort to help keep Garden City accident free! Let us know what you think about this intersection on our Facebook page, linked HERE
