With school back in session, there is no better time for a reminder on safety in school zones. The Village of Garden City is one of many villages that want to enforce safety in effort to keep their children safe and accident incidents low.

One area in Garden City that residents worry about is the intersection of Merillon Avenue and Rockaway Avenue. Recently, the Traffic Commission decided to suggest to the Garden City Board of Trustees to direct the Garden City Police Department to increase police enforcement of the speed limit, which is normally 30 but 20 mph when school is in session. They also recommended that blinking lights be installed to draw attention to the speed limit sign.

Residents of Garden City signed a peti- tion that was submitted to Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, Nassau County Commissioner of Public Works Shila Shah-Gavnoudias, P.E., along with various officials in the Village of Garden City and the Garden City School District.

Residents asked that one of the following remedies be applied near the east entrances to Garden City High School on Rockaway Avenue: a crosswalk, a stop sign or other prominent caution sign(s), a no parking sign on the east side of Rockaway across from the school, and enhanced police enforcement. Garden City Police will be strictly enforcing the speed limit in this area, especially during school hours. Please be careful on the road and join in the effort to help keep Garden City accident free! Let us know what you think about this intersection on our Facebook page, linked HERE
