How to Prevent Yard Work Injuries This Spring

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

It's finally spring!  Ready to spend some time outdoors?  Here are a few tips to help you prevent personal injury as you clean up your yard for spring.

Springtime Safety Tips:
  • Stretch First - Spring yard work involves using a lot of muscles that you might not have used all winter long.  Stretch first and take it easy when cleaning up leaves, mowing the lawn, and getting your yard ready for the warm weather.
  • Know Your Plants - Before you pull any weeds this spring, make sure you are able to identify poison ivy, sumac, oak and other toxic plants.  If you do get any rashes, know how to treat them to reduce the irritation.
  • Read Instructions Carefully - Many people sustain injuries from trimmers, lawn edgers, pruners and power saws.  Make sure you read the instructions carefully before use and check the product for damage.
  • Wear Protective Clothing - Wear protective clothing when you handle pesticides and fertilizers.

Tips to Help Make Snow Shoveling Easy

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

Even just a few inches of snow can be a chore to shovel.  Be careful if you are shoveling today!  Here are a few tips to help make managing snow easier.

Snow Shoveling Tips:
  • Stretch Beforehand -You might not realize it until afterwards, but even a small amount of shoveling can be a workout.  Take a few minutes to stretch before and after shoveling to help prevent injury.
  • Use the Right Amount of Salt - Using too much salt means that it can track into your house.  Less is more!  Use the right amount of salt to keep your walkways clear.
  • Create a Strategy - Clean off your cars before getting to the rest of your driveway.  On days where snow fall is heavy, avoid shoveling the same snow more than once.  Move the snow the shortest distance possible.
Read this article from longisland.com for more snow shoveling tips.

GM Recalls Fault Ignition Switches

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

GM recalled vehicles with faulty ignition switches yesterday.  They urge anyone who has not yet repaired the switch to contact their local dealer to arrange an appointment.

Vehicles Affected by the Recall:

  • Saturn ION (2003-2007)
  • Chevrolet Cobalt (2005-2010)
  • Chevrolet HHR (2006-2011)
  • Pontiac G5 (2007-2012)
  • Pontiac Solstice (2006-2012)
  • Saturn Sky (2007-2010)

The recalled ignition switch creates the danger of the airbags not deploying in the event of an auto accident.  If you're not sure if your car qualifies for the ignition switch recall, check this VIN look-up tool.

GM recommends that until car owners get their ignition switch fixed, they remove everything from their key ring except for the car key and make sure that the car is in park with the parking brake before exiting the vehicle.

Tips To Help You Drive Safely This Fall

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

Are you ready for cool weather and changing leaves?  As you prepare for the fall season, we remind you to stay safe when driving on the roads.  Here are a few driving hazards to keep in mind as the seasons change.

Autumn Road Hazards:
  • Fallen Leaves - Although fallen leaves are beautiful, they can also be slippery and dangerous when wet.  Keep an eye out for patches of wet leaves when you are driving.
  • Reduced Visibility - Daylight savings time is ending. This means that your visibility will be reduced when driving.  Use caution when driving and watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Changing Tire Pressure - The weather changes frequently from day to day in the fall.  These temperature changes can cause your tires to lose air pressure. Make sure they are properly inflated.
  • Sun Glare - Keep a good pair of sunglasses available in your car to counter any glare.  The sun will be rising and setting at new times that might affect your driving.

What To Do After An Auto Accident

Car accidents can put a person in shock.  Do you know what to do after an accident?  Being prepared can help you stay calm in an emergency.  Following these steps can make the claims process simple and help you get the money you deserve.

Steps to Take After an Accident:

·        Check for Injury – The first thing you should do following an auto accident is see if anyone in your vehicle or the other vehicle needs medical assistance.
·        Move to the Side – If your vehicles are blocking the road, move them to the side to a safe position.
·        Call 911 – Call the police to file an accident report.
·        Exchange Information – Get the insurance information and drivers’ license numbers of the other drivers involved in the auto accident.
·        Document – Take pictures with a camera or cell phone of your vehicle damage, the scene of the accident, and any injuries.

If you have recently been in an auto accident, the first thing you should do is get the medical care you need.  Notify your auto insurance provider, get a copy of the police report, and have your claim reviewed by a personal injury lawyer.  This will make sure that you are being treated fairly by your insurance company!

What To Do When You Experience A Bicycle Accident

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

As the weather warms up this spring, kids and adults will be heading out on their bicycles.  Unfortunately, drivers often fail to take proper precautions to protect vulnerable bikers.  Whether you ride your bike for fun, exercise or for transportation, you should always know what to do in the event you experience an accident

Bicycle Accident Tips:
Source: Wikipedia

  • Safety – This should always be your number one priority.  People often panic when they are in an accident.  Remember to calm down and find a place that is away from traffic.
  • Exchange Information – Just like after an auto accident, the bicyclist and driver should exchange information.  Take note of the driver’s registration number for an efficient claims process.
  • Evidence – If you have your phone on you, take some pictures of the scene and any damage.  Accurate details help make the claims process more streamlined.
  • Visit the Doctor – You might feel ok at first, but injuries take some time to reveal themselves.  It is worth it to visit the doctor for a check-up to address injuries early on and make sure that you are covered for any injuries.
  • Insurance Companies – Do not attempt to repair your bike until after you have spoken to the insurers.  Attempting to fix any damage could have an impact on your claim.

Man Files $15 Million Personal Injury Lawsuit Against Citi Bike

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530

The Citi Bike share program started in New York City just last May.  Now, the City Bike operator and New York City are facing a $15 million dollar lawsuit.  Ronald Corwin, a Connecticut resident, says that he has suffered serious injuries after flipping over the bike at a docking station.  The 73-year-old man suffers from traumatic nerve palsy and is no longer able to smell or taste.

Ronald Corwin’s case is the first personal injury suit filed by a cyclist over the bike share program.  The personal injury was a result of wheel stops that blend in with the road.  These low barriers next to the bicycle docking station have proved to be problematic for other cyclists too.  The city says the wheel stops were designed to prevent vehicles from damaging the equipment.  The barriers are now coated in orange paint to make the stops more visible for cyclists.

Snow & Ice Make New York A City Of Danger

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

Hospitals and doctors offices have become extremely busy during the past few weeks as the never ending snow and ice has caused a slew of slip and fall injuries. It doesn't help that in a fast paced city such as New York, the women refuse to part ways with their stiletto boots and pedestrians race across the streets in efforts to beat the lights and impatient cabs.  Walking at a cautious pace is never a priority in New York and as a result, emergency rooms have seen a 300 percent increase in patients due to slip and fall accidents. Whether young or old, in athletic shape or a couch potato, no one is immune to such accidents.

With each passing storm, people are forced to dig out their cars and pathways to the house.  Shoveling, especially the wet, heavy kind of snow we got on Wednesday, is a strenuous task and can lead to a heart attack. Shoveling can also cause a person to tear their rotator cuff, resulting in a trip to the ER.

With such a high demand for medical attention, doctors and medical staff have made the decision to sleep in the hospital. The New York City Fire Department has allocated additional ambulances during snow storms to better handle the hundreds of 911 calls coming in per day, as well as provide safe travel in such harsh conditions.

  • If you or any member of your family has been injured, get medical care. Even a mild closed head injury may result in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Follow all of your medical provider's instructions.
  • Notify your auto insurance provider of the accident, but do not make a statement to an insurance company representative or sign a settlement form before talking to an attorney.
  • Get a copy of the police report.
  • Continue to take pictures of your injuries throughout the course of healing.
  • Have your car accident claim reviewed by a personal injury lawyer familiar with New York State law and see that you are being treated fairly by your insurance company.

What To Do If You Are Involved In a Transit Accident

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com
Many New York City and Long Island residents rely heavily on the train, subway and bus systems (public transit) that serve more than 7 million people every day. Public transit vehicles are expected to meet a higher standard for safety than private motorist companies. They must take extra measures to avoid accidents and prevent injuries to passengers, employees, motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

Personal injury attorneys at our Nassau County law firm, the Law Offices of Louis D. Stober, Jr., L.L.C., represent transit employees, passengers, and others injured in accidents, helping them recover full and fair compensation for their losses. If you would like to speak with one of our lawyers about an injury claim, please contact our Garden City office and arrange a free consultation and case evaluation. Our attorneys will evaluate and examine evidence, witness statements, and transit authority reports regarding the train or bus accident to classify factors that caused the injury.  Our attorneys will consider the following:
  • Driver negligence, speeding, illegal log book, maintaining false driving records, drunk driving
  • Transit company negligence in training and supervision of employees
  • Failure of the transit company to maintain tracks and equipment in a safe manner
  • Failure to adhere to municipal, state, and federal safety regulations designed to protect passengers, operators, and track workers
  • Failure to note and repair known hazards and failure to set up warning lanterns
The transit company may be responsible for your injuries if you were injured when boarding or exiting a bus or train, a collision, or while working on the tracks. Our lead attorney, Louis D. Stober, Jr., has been handling injury claims for nearly thirty years and is fully committed to recovering full compensation for every individual that our firm represents.

If you or a member of your family has suffered a serious or catastrophic injury in a bus or train crash, or you have lost a loved one in a fatal accident, please call 877-881-7185 or e-mail our Garden City, New York, office to arrange a free consultation with one of our personal injury attorneys. It is our goal to help you recover full compensation for your loss.
