With life's uncertainty it's never too early to start making an estate plan, but it can be too late. Many people choose not to address the need to create a last will and testament, associating the task with morbidity. It is important to notify your family and friends of your desired wishes in the event that you suddenly pass on. Actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman is tragically a prime example of such a case.

The actor tragically died on February 2nd of an apparent drug overdose. Hoffman spoke candidly of his past struggles with addiction and even checked himself into a rehab center last year for 10 days after relapsing. The grieving process was made simpler for the family that survived him thanks to his preparedness of a will.

In the document, Hoffman bequeathed all of his personal property to Marianne "Mimi" O'Donnell, the mother of his three children.

State Labor Law Violated In Long Island: Workers Receive Compensation

Four workers hired by Looks Great Services, a contractor in Long Island, have filed complaints suggesting they were paid less than a quarter of what they should have earned for cleaning debris from Long Island Rail Road tracks after superstorm Sandy hit. Their apparent earnings violated the wage requirements set forth in New York State's labor law. Under the law, a prime contractor bears the responsibility of wage payments to a subcontractor.

A settlement has been reached in which Looks Great Services has agreed to pay $137,000. The deal extends to 16 workers, each receiving anywhere from $18,000 to $8,000. The State Labor Department refused to discuss the details of the settlement publicly, or how 12 other workers that did not initially file a claim became involved in the investigation. According to Newsday, this is not the first time state labor law was violated in Long Island after Sandy.

A 72-year-old female resident of Medford Multicare Center died recently due to the supposed neglect of nursing home employees. Aurelia Rios, 72, died due to not being attached to a ventilator machine which was ordered by a doctor. According to a civil suit, owners of the Center made close to $60 million for personal use over the last decade. Seven employees were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly allowing and covering up the death of the elderly woman. Two more employees were arrested for patient neglect.

The employees have been placed on a paid leave of absence while the issues are being reviewed. In the meantime, the state Department of Health must decide to either relocate patients or appoint a receiver to manage the home.
