Snow & Ice Make New York A City Of Danger

Hospitals and doctors offices have become extremely busy during the past few weeks as the never ending snow and ice has caused a slew of slip and fall injuries. It doesn't help that in a fast paced city such as New York, the women refuse to part ways with their stiletto boots and pedestrians race across the streets in efforts to beat the lights and impatient cabs.  Walking at a cautious pace is never a priority in New York and as a result, emergency rooms have seen a 300 percent increase in patients due to slip and fall accidents. Whether young or old, in athletic shape or a couch potato, no one is immune to such accidents.

With each passing storm, people are forced to dig out their cars and pathways to the house.  Shoveling, especially the wet, heavy kind of snow we got on Wednesday, is a strenuous task and can lead to a heart attack. Shoveling can also cause a person to tear their rotator cuff, resulting in a trip to the ER.

With such a high demand for medical attention, doctors and medical staff have made the decision to sleep in the hospital. The New York City Fire Department has allocated additional ambulances during snow storms to better handle the hundreds of 911 calls coming in per day, as well as provide safe travel in such harsh conditions.
