Today marks a year after the devastation of superstorm Sandy hit Long Island and surrounding areas. Events across the island are being held today to show the power of community and togetherness. 

The following towns are holding events today: 

Bayville: A candlelight vigil to commemorate the destruction and those lost to Sandy

               Where: Village Church, 9 Mountain Ave.

               When: 7-9 p.m.

Hempstead: A blood drive; donors will be automatically entered in a chance to win a raffle for Super                         Bowl tickets.

                   Where: Hofstra University, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center

                   When: until 8p.m.

Lindenhurst: A photo montage to show the destruction and reconstruction after Sandy.

                    Where: Lindenhurst Town Square’s gazebo, 1 Hoffman Ave.

                    When: 7:30 p.m.

Long Beach: Lantern lighting

                     Where: Kennedy Park

                     When: 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Massapequa: Lantern lighting; nonperishable food donation to YES community center

                     Where: Florence Avenue Beach

                     When: 6:15 p.m.

Hofstra University to Host Presidential Debate!

Tomorrow night, Hofstra University in Hempstead will behosting the Presidential Debate between current President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.  Security will be tighter than ever before on the Long Island campus.

Hofstra University hosted a debate in 2008. However, officials point out security will be much tighter this year due to the emergence of groups that didn't exist in 2008. Located at the debate site, there will be detectives, patrolmen, emergency-services, special operations officers and hazardous material experts.

In 2008, Nassau County spent about $612,000 on police overtime for the debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. That number is expected to be larger this year.

New Gun Buyback Program To Begin This Weekend

Beginning on June 23^rd, the Nassau County police are planning a gun buyback program.  

Any individual who turns in operable handguns will be paid two hundred dollars in cash. Licensed guns, BB guns, air pistols, long guns and replicas will not be accepted.

The program will run from 9 a.m. until noon at Union Baptist Church, located at 24 Clinton C. Boone Place in Hempstead.
