Tuesday’s New York voting polls resulted in an approved
referendum to expand non-Indian-run casinos. The casinos will produce thousands
of jobs as well as a vast amount of revenue. Governor Andrew Cuomo tells Newsday the casinos could earn around
$430 million a year.
The developmental expansion would be limited to four upstate locations for seven years. Following that, more downstate casinos will then be allowed to expand. For Nassau and Suffolk Counties, there are more limits on casino expansion. Long Island casinos can have up to 1,000 machines or, video lottery terminals, at each location. The Long Island casino expansion was approved by two-thirds of the voters in Nassau and Suffolk. (Newsday)
Not all are on board with the casino referendum. Critics say
those with gambling issues will be more enticed to gamble instead of
rehabilitate. It also competes with local merchants. (Newsday)
Other referendums, including Adirondack Park taking land
from NYCO Minerals, were approved. The referendum to increase judges’ retirement
age from 70 to 80 failed. (Newsday)
