Were you one of the thousands of customers who purchased Sketchers’ various fitness sneakers in hopes of getting the curves of Kim Kardashian or the toned body of Brooke Burke? Well, the government is informing all consumers out there that purchasing a pair of these sneakers will NOT get you that body like the celebrities who endorsed the product.

Sketchers USA Inc. will be facing up to $40 million to settle charges by the Federal Trade Commission. The charges are being made because the footwear company made many unfounded claims that its Shape-Up sneakers along with their Resistance Runner, Toners and Tone-up shoes would help individuals lose more weight and tone their bodies simply by wearing the shoes.  Shape-ups were reportedly going to promote weight loss and tone muscle due to the curved bottom design. The Resistance Runner shoe was supposed to increase muscle aviation by up to 85% for posture-related muscles and 71% for buttocks muscles.

The Federal Trade Commission believes that Sketchers USA Inc. falsely represented that clinical studies backed up the company’s claims about their toning shoes.

Any consumer who purchased these shoes will be eligible for refund; although it has yet to be determined how much money they’ll be compensated. The FTC has reported that compensation will be based off of how many claims are submitted throughout the eight month filing period. Consumers can file their claims on the Federal Trade Commission website.
