A year has already passed since Edward Mangano, Nassau County Executive, proposed building a new hockey arena in place of Nassau Coliseum using hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars. No one, including Mangano, has come to any sort of plan to redevelop Nassau Coliseum or its surrounding 77 acres.

The New York Islanders current lease with the coliseum is set to expire in 2015. Islander owner Charles Wang won’t keep the team in the coliseum beyond that. This year, there is $750 million in state funding for economic development projects and the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council must receive proposals no later than June 15th.

Mangano reported last Friday that he is hoping within the next month there will be a proposal for the arena then can then compete for state funds and meet the June deadline.  He is looking at low-interest financing options that may help in bringing down the cost of the project since the offer last August was rejected.
