Early Monday morning, tragedy struck the Southern State Parkway. Four teenagers were ejected and instantly killed from a vehicle whose driver survived, however, was driving with only a learner’s permit.

The driver was identified as 18 year old Joseph Beer of Richmond Hill, Queens. He was driving a 2012 Subaru Impreza at a high speed that couldn't handle the curve of the parkway. Beer was taken to Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola to be treated for injuries.

New York State law and the Department of Motor Vehicles says that those with a learners permit have restricted privileges and are prohibited from driving without a supervising licensed driver who is over the age of 21. Also, these drivers are not allowed to drive between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. in the 5 boroughs of New York City and Nassau and Suffolk counties.
