A top secret court order issued in April and disclosed Wednesday night, is requiring Verizon to hand over all telephone records of millions of US customers to the National Security Agency; made possible under a hotly debated section of the Patriot Act.

Verizon is to provide records on an ongoing and daily basis on all telephone calls in its systems (both within the US and between the US and other countries), indiscriminately and in bulk - regardless if anyone is suspected of wrong doing.

Under the terms of the order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, in addition to their location data, time, unique identifiers, and duration of calls. The order does not apply to the content of the communications.

The order was granted to the FBI on April 25th by FISA (the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court), giving the government unlimited authority to obtain data for a specified three month period effective until July 19, 2013.

The court order specifically prohibits Verizon from disclosing to the public either the existence of the FBI's request for its customers' records, or the court order itself.
