Today marks a year after the devastation of superstorm Sandy hit Long Island and surrounding areas. Events across the island are being held today to show the power of community and togetherness.
The following towns are holding events today:
Bayville: A candlelight vigil to commemorate the destruction and those lost to Sandy
Where: Village Church, 9 Mountain Ave.
When: 7-9 p.m.
Hempstead: A blood drive; donors will be automatically entered in a chance to win a raffle for Super Bowl tickets.
Where: Hofstra University, Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center
When: until 8p.m.
Lindenhurst: A photo montage to show the destruction and reconstruction after Sandy.
Where: Lindenhurst Town Square’s gazebo, 1 Hoffman Ave.
When: 7:30 p.m.
Long Beach: Lantern lighting
Where: Kennedy Park
When: 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Massapequa: Lantern lighting; nonperishable food donation to YES community center
Where: Florence Avenue Beach
When: 6:15 p.m.
