The Commuter Parity Act of 2013 is scheduled to expire within the next couple of weeks. The act is a transit tax break for over 700,000 New York Long Island Railroad commuters. (Newsday)

The Commuter Parity Act uses programs such as TransitChek and WageWorks to allot as much as $245 each month to commuters. The act’s deductible saves over $1,300 LIRR commuters a year. (Newsday)

Sen. Charles Schumer is working hard with public transportation advocates to extend the act to at least the end of 2014. Schumer tells Newsday NY commuters need every tax break available.

Schumer states if a commuter is taking the LIRR from Garden City to Penn Station, that commuter can earn up to a $242 deductible each month on a ticket. Newsday reports, there will be a challenge to extend the act because some lawmakers in certain states who have less railroad commuters are hesitant.
