The New York Islanders lease has only three years left at
Nassau Coliseum. Because there are no plans surfacing for a new arena, the
Islanders only option to continue to play in New York is to move to Brooklyn.
In 2015, the Islanders may consider playing at the soon to open Barclays center.
Charles Wang, owner of the New York Islanders has reported
that the team will not play anymore games in Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum
after their lease is up in 2015. He feels that the arena is antiquated. The Islanders are the only team out of eleven
major league sports franchises in the New York and surrounding Metropolitan
area that does not play in a new or recently renovated facility.
Gary Bettman, NHL commissioner has stated that there is
still time for the Islanders to come up with a plan. Nassau County Executive Ed
Mangano has also been trying to work out options for the Isles to stay in
Nassau County. He is looking for a master developer that will be able to work
with Charles Wang and negotiate a deal on a new arena for the Islanders.
When do you think a deal will be finalized for the
Islanders? Do you think they would be a good fit for Brooklyn? Or do you think
they belong in Nassau? Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook page linked HERE!
