Recently, a nighttime fire destroyed a home on Sunset Drive in Centereach. After the fire was put out, fire officials found three illegal bedrooms in the basement of the home. (News 12)

A total of four adults and two children were home when the house set on fire around 11:30 Tuesday night. Two people were slightly injured during the fire; one was treated for smoke inhalation and another for a hurt arm. (News 12)

Fire Marshalls plan on giving summonses for the illegal bedrooms. However, one neighbor tells News 12 they are quiet friendly people and understand the necessity of an apartment to “make ends meet.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown and the Town of Brookhaven continues to investigate.

This past Monday, a plan has been set for the upcoming renovation of Nassau Coliseum.  Nassau County Legislature has approved for a budge of $229 million. County Executive Ed Mangano has led the way for this event. (Mineola Patch)

The unanimous vote plans for Forest City Ratner to reconstruct the coliseum starting in August 2015.  The renovations include seating for 13,000. That is 3,000 less than the capacity of the coliseum now. This plan will hopefully bring in more minor league sports teams.

The President of the Long Island Federation of Labor, John Durso, tells the Mineola Patch that the renovation project will create over 1,000 labor union jobs. The ideal goal is to produce a couple thousand hours of labor in order to boost Nassau’s economy.

As for the New York Islanders, their lease will end some short time before the renovation begins. The Islanders will then move to their new home at the Barclays Center.

Governor Cuomo Puts Up Designated Texting Signs on Thruway

In New York State, texting and driving has become a serious issue. In an attempt to fight the growing problem, Governor Cuomo says the state Thruway will provide 91 signs dedicated to texting rest stops.

The signs will point how many miles to a designated texting location in order to remind people to fight the urge to answer a text while driving. The effort is to notify drivers that rest stops, parking areas and other pull over areas are not only for resting but also for catching up on texts.

Cuomo tells WXXI the signs will say, “It can wait.” This displays the importance of driving safely and the dangers of distracted driving.  Other signs will list penalties for texting while driving such as a $150 fine and up to five points off on your driver’s license.
