Two New
York hospitals are taking action in order to encourage healthy eating. Harlem
Hospital and Lincoln Medical Center in the South Bronx are focusing on
low-income, high-risk patients who cannot afford to purchase fruits and
vegetables from farmers markets across the city.
Doctors
are handing out “prescriptions” or “Health Bucks” which are $2 coupons good for
any of the farmers markets in NYC.
The
Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program consists of 140 obese patients so far.
The city hopes to expand farmers market revenue while providing healthy choices
for patients and their families.
The
pilot study includes healthy eating counseling and one day hopes to expand the
program.
