CSEA, a
Nassau County public-sector labor union has filed a lawsuit against Nassau County PD.
CSEA claims the Nassau County Police Departments failed to properly train 911 operators properly, especially in advanced emergency situations.
Misinterpreted
calls can lead to false dispatching which determines police response time. In a recent News 12 article, representative attorney for the labor union, Louis D. Stober, says, "by not providing this essential training, the public is at risk for substandard call responses."
The suit
stems from the recent death of Hofstra student Andrea Rebello. Rebello was held
hostage during a home invasion. A police shootout led to her death. According to the Head of Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, the responding officer was misinformed of the situation.
Louis D.Stober added that had the 911 operator received the proper training, the
robbery could have ended differently.
Between
2008-2012, Nassau County has been granted $3.4 million for the 911 operators program. Stober
says operators must complete 21 hours of in-service classroom training in order
to properly dispatch emergencies and learn the communications equipment. According
to CSEA president Jerry Laricchiuta, instructional pamphlets were given out
instead of training.
