It looked as if the Yankees were going to deal the
undefeated Matt Harvey his first loss of the season. In the 6th
inning, Lyle Overbay produced an RBI single that gave the Yankees their only
run, which seemed like it would have been enough to give the Bronx Bombers the
win; especially since they carried that 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th
inning with who else, but the perfect 18 for 18 (in save opportunities), Mariano
Rivera.
Luckily for the Mets, they had their hottest hitters coming
up to face the extraordinary closer. Daniel Murphy was up first and hit the
ball into shallow left field, which bounced into the stands for a ground rule
double. The always clutch, David Wright followed with an RBI single through short that almost hit Murphy. Wright made it to 2nd after the throw got
away from Catcher, Chris Stewart’s glove. The game was tied and the Mets dealt
Rivera his first blown save of his last season.
With Lucas Duda up with no outs and Wright on 2nd,
it looked like the Mets were going to steal this game with a walk-off. Lucas
Duda did not disappoint. On a 1-1 count, Duda blooped a single over second
base, for the walk off, 2-1 win. The win gave Rivera his first loss of the season and completed the Citi Field sweep of the
Yankees, by the Mets.
The remaining 2 Subway Series games will be played tonight
and tomorrow at Yankee Stadium, a change since previous years which had
previously seen the crosstown rivals play 2 separate 3 game series.
First pitch is at 7:05.
