Long Island Brothers Caught in $96 million Ponzi Scheme

Last week, two brother-in-laws, Brian Callahan and Adam Manson, were caught in a Ponzi scheme costing $96 million. The two men used their Montauk hotel bought in 2007, Panoramic View Resort & Residence, to lure investors to what they thought were hedge funds.

Between 2006 and 2012, Callahan and Manson had 40 investors raising $118 million. Officials told Newsday.com  the $96 million went towards luxury homes, cars and a golf club membership for both Callahan and Manson.

Real estate agents say the two men’s downfall was overpricing the houses and rooms while the real estate economy declined.

One of the investors was the Montauk Fire Department, which put $600,000 towards the Panoramic View. The fire department’s intentions were to use that money for scholarships. After suspicion, the department withdrew the investment luckily getting all their money back. If convicted, Callahan and Manson could face up to 20 years in prison.

Distracted Driving Laws Take a Turn

As of this past July 4^th weekend, Governor Cuomo lead the crackdown on distracted driving on Long Island. Distracted driving accounts for a motorist texting or emailing on a handheld device while driving.

According to Newsday, New York State Police issued 486 tickets or cell phone infractions over the 2013 July 4th weekend. Since then, New York has put in a $1 million effort to increase law enforcement.Since then, New York has put in a $1 million effort to increase law enforcement. Long Island News & Press Releases says the funding comes from previous distracted driving prevention funds and accounts that have been seized.

In order to prevent distracted driving Governor Cuomo introduced Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement (CITE). The objective of CITE is an undercover operation where State Police will blend in with traffic to be able to see motorists committing the crime. The special SUVs police will be driving are higher than most vehicles in order to see into a car more easily. 

The Press Release also quotes senator Carl Marcellino saying they hope to crack down on teenage drivers since texting is a “second nature” to them. The Newsday article states those with probationary or junior licenses will receive the same suspensions as speeding and reckless driving. To show how serious this new law is any cell phone use while driving will now be five points off a license instead of three.

In the Press Release Governor Cuomo says with these new restrictions New York will become a safer place. The increased police activity will be a third eye to those who are not watching the road like they should be.

MLB Players Face Possible Suspension

By the end of this week, Major League Baseball will announce the suspension of nine baseball players. Some of the best baseball players in the game will soon face a lengthy suspension, and possibly a lifetime ban due to steroids.

The accused players - who will soon be suspended - have allegedly been involved in a performance-enhancing drug scheme over the past few seasons.According to CBS Sports, Alex Rodriguez, one of the accused, said he’ll appeal whatever repercussions are thrown at him. “Most of the players will be suspended for 50 games, but some – including the Yankees’ embattled superstar – face stiffer penalties for lying to MLB investigators or interfering in baseball’s year-long Biogenesis investigation. Not all of the players linked in media reports to Biogenesis face discipline."

Rodriguez is headlining the allegations because he reportedly mislead Major League Baseball during their investigation into the Biogenesis Clinic. Lying under oath during an investigation for performance enhancing drugs cannot only destroy your career, but can also ruin your public image. Bud Selig, the commissioner of the MLB, takes these actions very seriously, which is why there are talks for a possible lifetime ban for Alex Rodriguez.

The MLB and the Players Association had a meeting earlier this week and had this to say about the players who were found guilty: “Most of the players will be suspended for 50 games, but some – including the Yankees’ embattled superstar – face stiffer penalties for lying to MLB investigators or interfering in baseball’s year-long Biogenesis investigation. Not all of the players linked in media reports to Biogenesis face discipline, sources have told The News.”

Fans are waiting patiently as the finishing touches are being added to the investigation. It’s crazy to think that one of the best players of all time, a first ballot hall of famer, can potentially be banned from baseball for life because of his actions off the field.

DWI Enforcement In Nassau Cracks Down

Nassau County is slowly cracking down on their DWI enforcement after the Highway Patrol Bureau officers announced a STOP-DWI enforcement initiative across the country.

Now that the precedent has been set, expect Nassau County police to be in force and become a lot stricter starting next month. The Police Commissioner Thomas Dale and County Executive Edward Mangano have announced the importance of this enforcement in their campaign today. They claim that the grant will allow the allocation of more officers on duty, which they hope will help crackdown people who are drinking while intoxicated.

DWI incidents have become very common over the past few years. With that said, this is the first step in the right direction to limit accidents like these from occurring anywhere on Long Island.

NYC Hospitals Handing out Fruit Prescriptions

Two New York hospitals are taking action in order to encourage healthy eating. Harlem Hospital and Lincoln Medical Center in the South Bronx are focusing on low-income, high-risk patients who cannot afford to purchase fruits and vegetables from farmers markets across the city.

Doctors are handing out “prescriptions” or “Health Bucks” which are $2 coupons good for any of the farmers markets in NYC.

The Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program consists of 140 obese patients so far. The city hopes to expand farmers market revenue while providing healthy choices for patients and their families.

The pilot study includes healthy eating counseling and one day hopes to expand the program.

Six Flags Roller Coaster Death Still Being Investigated

A young woman was thrown off a roller coaster and fell to her death on Friday, July 20^th at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington.

The reason why she was thrown off is still being investigated, but a witness claims the woman-expressed concern about the Texas Giant roller coaster safety bar not completely engaging as the ride was starting. That being said, why wouldn't the employees working the 14-story ride make sure the bar was securely fastened? 

German roller coaster maker, Tobias Lindnar, is sending officials to Texas to further investigate what exactly happened that Friday afternoon. Lindnar has a stellar reputation, having zero problems with car safety bars on any of the 50 roller coasters that have been built over the past 30 years.

Sharon Parker, the spokeswoman for the Arlington amusement park, reiterated the importance of finding out what exactly went wrong and how it happened. She stated: “We are committed to determining the cause of this tragic accident and will utilize every resource throughout this process; it would be disservice to the family to speculate regarding what transpired.”

Jason Kidd Pleads Guilty

Former New York Knick, and new head coach of the Brooklyn nets, Jason Kidd, has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge this past week.

Kidd was arrested last summer on July 15th, after signing his new deal with the Knicks. Police go on to say Jason crashed his Cadillac SUV into a telephone pole in South Hampton late that night. Almost a year later, Kidd admitted in court that he had obtained “three to four drinks of tequila” before the incident occurred.

Tom Spota, Suffolk County District Attorney says that even though Kidd has been willing to cooperate, his actions will not be forgotten and he will not be getting off easy. Jason kid is on interim probation until he speaks to two Suffolk County schools about the risk of drinking and driving.

Kidd can knock down his charge to driving while impaired once he speaks to the two schools. For the time being, Kidd’s license remains suspended until further notice.
