Enjoy Your Time on the Water with Safe Boating Tips

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530

Are you enjoying the warmer weather?  Boating season is right around the corner!  Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind before you head out on your first boating trip of the year.

Boating Safety Tips:
  • Check the Weather - ALWAYS check the weather before you had out on the water.  There are many resources that give information on wave heights, tides, and whether or not a storm is coming later in the day.  If you notice darkening clouds, play it safe and bring your boat back into the dock.
  • Carry Enough Lifejackets - Life jackets are an important part of your boating experience.  Make sure that you have enough life jackets on board for your whole family and keep in mind that children under a certain age are required to wear a life jacket by law.
  • Drive Sober - Alcohol related boating accidents are common, especially as we approach warm weather holidays.  Always avoid operating a motor vehicle when under the influence of alcohol.
  • Take a Boating Safety Course - Beginning boaters and experienced boaters can both benefit from taking a boating safety course.  They help provide boating safety rules and make sure that you are educated and prepared for navigating local waterways.

Tips to Help You Avoid Pot Holes and Car Damage

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530

Be careful when driving to and from work this week.  Now that the weather is warming and the snow is melting, potholes are becoming a serious problem.  Not only can they cost you money in repairs, but they can also be dangerous as drivers swerve to avoid them.  Here are a few tips to help you avoid damage.

Driving Tips:

  • Keep Tires Inflated - A tire can pop if the wheel rim pinches against the jagged edge of a pothole.  Keep your tires properly inflated to avoid issues.
  • Watch for Puddles - On rainy days and as snow melts, beware of puddles.  They can be deep potholes filled with water!  Keep an eye out - especially at night.
  • Drive Slowly - Reduce your speed when driving so that if you do hit a pothole, you will be less likely to have damage to your vehicle.
  • Don't Swerve - While swerving might be your instinct, you could hit the pothole at an odd angle, causing more damage to the tire, wheel rim and alignment.
Check out this article for more tips on how to avoid potholes.

The Department of Transportation has filled more than 145,000 potholes since mid-December. If you notice a pothole, you can report it online or by calling 311.
