While many people think that they can put it off, failing to address a traffic ticket can lead to points on your driver's licence, increased insurance premiums and large fines.  Speeding tickets are one of the main reasons that New Yorkers lose their driver's licenses.

Our traffic violation lawyers know what needs to be done to protect your right to drive.

When to Go to Traffic Court:

  • You Can Prove You're Innocent -  If you have evidence that shows that you were not speeding, it's worth going to traffic court to present the information to the judge.
  • You're Innocent and Have Spare Time - Many cases are dismissed because the police officer decides to skip their court date.  If you can attend court without significantly disrupting your routine, there is a chance it can work in your favor.
  • There are Dire Consequences - If you are in danger of losing your license or you are facing a severe penalty, it's important to have the case seen before a judge. Our attorneys can help you prepare for the case.
If you recently received a traffic ticket, contact our office.  We know you are busy and we respect your time.   Our attorneys will explain your ticket and show you all of the options available to you.  If possible, we will handle your case without you ever having to make a court appearance.

Speeding tickets are one of the main reasons that New Yorkers lose their driver’s license.  If you find yourself with a traffic ticket, it is important that you understand the options available to you.  Whether you choose to fight the ticket during a hearing or pay the fine, our traffic violation lawyers know what needs to be done to protect your right to drive.

DMV Tips on Fighting a Ticket:
  • Notify the Court – Depending on where you obtained your violation, you will either appear at the Traffic Violations Bureau or the local courthouse.
  • Take Action – Be sure to take action within 30 days of receiving the ticket.  Those that fail to pay or plead not guilty can have their license suspended.
  • Hire a Lawyer – An experienced traffic violations lawyer can help minimize your consequences and keep you on the road.
  • Pleading Your Case – During the hearing, the judge will listen and accept evidence from both you and the police officer who cited you.  Unless the judge finds “clear and convincing evidence,” you will be found not guilty.

School Zone Speeding Cameras Approved

Speeding cameras are expected to be added to Long Island and New York City school speed zones.  These cameras will have photographic, micro-photographic and video electronic capabilities to detect drivers who speed in these zones.  The new law is expected to be signed fairly quickly now that it has been approved by the state Assembly and Senate.

This new law will add 125 high-tech cameras on Long Island and 120 in New York City.  Drivers who are caught speeding by these cameras will receive a $50 ticket in the mail.  If the ticket is not paid, there is an additional $25 fine.  Although these cameras are designed to reduce traffic fatalities, they are also creating revenue.  The tickets are expected to generate as much as $50 million in revenue for Nassau County and a few million for Suffolk County.

NYPD Cracks Down on Speeding: Adds 200 Radar Guns to the Force

The NYPD recently announced drastic changes that are intended to improve the quality of New York City’s traffic enforcement.  The Police Department is adding 200 radar guns throughout the city’s 77 precincts in a serious effort to crack down on speeding.  This addition more than doubles the amount of radar guns that are now used in New York City.

The new emphasis on speeding is part of Mayor de Blasio’s “Vision Zero” plan.  This effort intends to completely eliminate traffic fatalities by 2024.  There were 286 people killed in traffic related accidents in New York City last year.  According to Chief Thomas Chan, the head of the NYPD’s Transportation Bureau, officers are already being trained on how to use the radar guns.  However, some are skeptical about the new speeding enforcement effort.  Council Member Chaim Deutsch suggested at the City Council committee meeting that some cops were already overzealous in pulling over drivers in his district.

We want to remind all of our clients that they should not delay paying any speeding tickets they receive.  Failed payments can lead to points on your driver’s license and even result in license revocation.  At the Law Offices of Louis D. Stober, Jr., L.L.C. we are happy to offer a consultation to explain your ticket and discuss your options.  Schedule a meeting with one of our experienced traffic lawyers by calling our Garden City office at 877-881-7185.  Remember to drive safely!
