Teen drivers make up the largest percentage of auto accidents – more than any other age group.  However, with safe driving practices you can stay safe on the roads this summer!  Here are a  few tips to help you drive safely.

Safety Tips:
  • Turn off Your Phone – Studies show that using your cell phone while driving can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence.  This is even true with hands-free devices!
  • Don’t Text and Drive – On average, texting causes loss of focus for 5 seconds.  A lot can go wrong in 5 seconds!
  • Use Your Headlights – Doing so can increase your visibility and help other drivers see you both at night and on sunny days.
  • Drive at the Speed Limit – Speeding is the cause of 40% of all fatal teen accidents.
  • Practice Defensive Driving – Always make sure that you maintain a buffer zone between you and the car in front of you, depending on the speed limit.

The Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) is a comprehensive safety course.  It provides drivers with essential information about traffic safety issues, driver attitude, behavior, and defensive driving techniques.  Here are a few of the benefits of taking a defensive driving course.

Defensive Driving Course Benefits:
  • Point Reduction – After competition of the course, you can receive a 4 point reduction on your NYS DMV driving record.
  • Insurance Reduction – Drivers receive a 10% reduction on the base rate of their auto and motorcycle insurance.
  • Knowledge – While this may not be your primary reason for taking a defensive driving course, it is a great way to refresh your driving knowledge.

Defensive driving courses include 320 minutes of instruction.  Drivers can find an approved classroom provider or online provider on the NY DMV website.
