Current employees at the Garden City Hotel may all be facing
layoffs this week. The hotel was recently sold to a Manhattan real-estate group
who plans to layoff its entire staff. In an email sent to employees this week,
it stated that some will be re-employed.
Patrick S. Smalley, the hotels vice president and managing
director told employees in an email that the new ownership changeover is
expected to happen this week. He also told employees when the management
changeover occurs; they will be receiving a termination letter. It has been
reported that the hotel employs about 300 people.
Smalley stated that the layoffs were a necessary part of the
transition into new management. He also said that, “It requires the termination
of all employees before new ownership can extend offers of employment to them.
It is a difficult process to navigate, and we have taken every precaution to
carry it out in the most dignified way for every employee.”
