As you get ready to spend time with your family and friends this weekend, remember to be safe!  Whether your are traveling in the rain and snow or staying home and cooking, here are a few tips to help you celebrate a safe and happy Thanksgiving day.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips:
  • Clean Cooking Surfaces - Keeping your cooking surfaces clean will help prevent grease buildup as you're preparing your Thanksgiving meal.
  • Don't Leave Stove Unattended - If you have to leave the kitchen, make sure the stove is turned off or another adult is supervising. Use a timer to remind yourself that the stove is on!
  • Watch Kids and Pets - Kids and pets might unknowingly knock into something in the kitchen. Keep an eye on them and make sure they stay away from the cooking area.
  • Be Careful Driving - If you plan on driving tonight or tomorrow morning, plan for rain and icy roads. Always use your seat belt and make sure that you are well rested before a long trip.

  • Pack Light - Consider your vehicle's load capacity before packing suitcases and gear into the car.

Don't Make These Estate Planning Mistakes

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

Have you created your estate plan yet?  Estate plans are a valuable asset to you and your family.  Make sure you avoid these common estate planning mistakes!

Estate Planning Mistakes to Avoid:
  • Don't Leave it Up to the State - A will indicates who receives what when you pass away.  However, you estate may have to go through a public probate process, which can be very expensive.  Creating a trust will eliminate this process and ensure your privacy.
  • Don't Forget to Fund the Trust - Your trust doesn't exist until it holds assets.  You need to retitle your accounts in the name of your trust.
  • Don't Forget to Update Them - Many people create their estate-planning documents and forget about them.  However, your relationships with people may change over time.  You should always keep your documents up-to-date.
  • Don't Forget to Look at Beneficiary Forms - Retirement accounts and insurance policies do not flow through your trust or will.  They are governed by the beneficiary you elected when you created them.  It's a good idea to look over these forms and revise them after you have gone through a divorce or had more children.
  • Don't Forget to Consult Us - Our experienced attorneys can help you make sure that you are following all of the steps necessary to get your estate in order.  You don't want to end up with unnecessary fees!

Should You Fight Your Traffic Ticket?

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

Traffic violation tickets range from speeding to forgetting to use your turning signal.  If you receive a ticket, don't panic.  You may be able to have the charges dropped by fighting the ticket in court.  Here are a few of the advantages to fighting your ticket.

Advantages:
  • Dropped Charges - The most obvious advantage of contesting a traffic violation is that your charges are dropped.  You won't have to pay a traffic ticket, have the incident added to your driving record and you won't have any points added to your license.
  • Maintain Insurance Premium - Insurance companies keep a close eye on your driving habits, including any tickets you receive.  If you fight your ticket and win, your premium won't go up!
  • Retain Driving Privileges - Certain speeding tickets can suspend or revoke your driving privileges.  Keeping this ticket off your record will prevent this.

Employee Sick Leave Laws

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

It's that time of year again.  With cold and flu season beginning, many employees will be using their sick days.  Fortunately, New York City is among the cities who have passed laws implementing mandatory sick leave this year.

New York City is the largest jurisdiction to implement mandatory sick leave.  However, San Francisco and the state of Connecticut have implemented similar laws.  These laws are designed to provide families with the time to improve their health and increase work productivity by keeping sick employees from spreading germs at work.

The details of sick leave laws vary from place to place.  If you aren't sure what sick leave you are entitled to at work, ask your employer.  You can also contact our employment attorneys and read more about changing sick leave laws in Business Week.

How to Drive Safely On Rainy Days

350 Old Country Road, Suite 205, Garden City, NY 11530
877-791-8076 / StoberLaw.com

Wet roads and fall leaves can make driving difficult on rainy days.  Here are a few tips to help you drive safely today.

Driving Tips:
  • Wear Your Seat Belt - It's important to take precautions when driving, especially in the rain.
  • Be Careful of Hydroplaning -The best way to avoid hydroplaning is by driving slowly and avoiding hard turns.
  • Drive Slowly - Leave space between you and the vehicles around you. It can be difficult to come to a complete stop on wet road. Leaving some buffer room can help prevent an accident!
  • Check Your Lights - Make sure that your headlights, tail lights and brake lights are working. They are an important part of driving safely and they help other cars see you on the road.
  • Avoid Skidding - If you notice that your car is skidding, it is important to stay calm. Slamming on your brakes could actually cause your car to skid more. Instead, continue to steer your car in the correct direction.

New York is cracking down on texting while driving.  Governor Cuomo passed a new law over the weekend that will place stricter rules on young and inexperienced drivers.

Effective November 2nd, new and young drivers convicted of texting-while-driving will have their license suspended for 120 days.  Second and subsequent offenses within six months of reissuance of the license will result in license suspension for a full year.

According to Govenor Cuomo, it's important to instill safe driving habits early on.  By enforcing stricter penalties on texting and driving and establishing texting zones, Governor Cuomo hopes to make safe driving a priority in New York.
