Will you be going on a Labor Day weekend road trip?  New York City is considered the most road rage-inducing city in the United States.  Here are a few tips to help make your road trip planning a little bit less stress-inducing.

Weekend Driving Tips:
  • Mobile Apps – You should never use your phone while driving, but mobile phone maps have become an integral part of the road-trip experience.  Just make sure you keep your phone use hands-free!  Let your passengers help you out or turn up the volume on your GPS.
  • Plan Ahead – 62% of people find that price is the most important part of renting a car.  Size is the second most important feature, followed by rental type, style, and brand.  Do your research before leaving for your road trip!
  • Get Plenty of Sleep – Sleepiness is a contributing factor to road rage.  If you are sleepy, you are more likely to become annoyed with other drivers.  Get plenty of sleep the night before your trip!
  • Don’t Forget to Breathe – If you notice yourself getting tense, take a break to stretch.  Periodically rolling down the window and breathing deeply and slowly is also a great way to relieve tension on your trip.

Will social media play a role in your estate planning?  Many people don’t consider working their digital lives into their estate plans.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Social Media Tips:
  • Wills –Don’t put passwords or websites you have sign-on access to into your will.  Since wills are subject to probate court, you don’t want this information to become part of the public process.
  • Social Media – If you run a small business, make sure that your social media accounts are in the name of your business.
  • Spreadsheets – This is one of the best ways to protect your online data.  Track every website where you have a digital account, including your bank accounts, email accounts, and Facebook.  Many people forget that they have online accounts that have credit card and other information stored.
For more tips on how social media pages should factor into your estate planning, read this article from the Chicago Tribune.

A new law will make it easier to transfer New York State fishing licenses among family members.  The law is intended to benefit commercial fisheries on the east end.  It will improve the efficiency of transferring certain commercial fishing licenses to immediate family members if the license holder passes away prior to transfer.

Senator Ken LaValle’s bill was signed into law last Tuesday, August 12th.  This new law amended the previous environmental conservation law that allowed the Department of Environmental Conservation to transfer commercial fishing license to immediate family members.  In the past, the law defined immediate family members as those who lived with the license holder.  Now however, family members, including children and parents, are eligible to receive a transferred license even if they do not live in the same household.

We’re already halfway through the month of August!  Here are a few of the best waterside activities to do on Long Island before the summer comes to a close.

Visit the Long Beach Boardwalk
Long Beach is a favorite summer destination for many Long Islanders.  The city’s newly reconstructed boardwalk has carts, food trucks, and various vendors.   They also have volleyball courts for more active beachgoers.

Whale-Watching Day Cruise
Summer whale-watching day trips leave from Montauk.  According to the organizers, the trips were 100% successful last year.  That means that passengers saw whales and/or dolphins on every excursion.

Fishing At Captree
Captree Boat Basin has about two dozen charter boats that offer full- or half-day fishing trips.  All the gear is provided.  All you have to do is book the trip in advance or show up about a half-hour before sailing time.

Splish Splash
This waterpark is a great spot for families.  They even have a new water ride involving rafts with water-shooting cannons for riders to shoot at other boats.

Sections of almost all of Long Island’s major roadways were closed during this morning’s commute.    Due to the severe flooding, Gov. Andrew Cuomo dispatched both emergency equipment and personnel.

Nearly every major roadway in Suffolk and Nassau County experienced a full or partial closure due to flooding, according to the Department of Transportation.  In many cases, all lanes were closed for several hours.  This caused traffic to back up for miles.

According to the National Weather Service, 13.27 inches of rain were recorded at Islip’s Long Island MacArthur Airport between midnight Tuesday and 10:30 am this morning.  Motorists should be careful when driving today.  Flooding has made commuting difficult across the island.

For tourists and residents, New York is a great place to spend time on the water.  Lakes, rivers, and coastal water ways are perfect fishing and boating destinations.  In an effort to ensure a fun and enjoyable experience on the water, Governor Andrew Cuomo recently announced the addition of 6 new Patrol Boats to local law enforcement agencies across New York.

New York is the 8th in the nation for registered watercrafts – not including non-powered boats like kayaks and canoes.  New York State allocated a total of $2.1 million to cover the costs of marine safety efforts for 53 law enforcement agencies across New York.  According to Congressman Tim Bishop, “Maritime safety is a top priority year-round, but particularly during the summer months.”  By partnering with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation the department is able to afford state-of-the-arty equipment to patrol waterways at no cost to the county.

New Legislation Applies to School Coaches

A new state law requires school sports coaches to report suspected child abuse to authorities.  This new legislation adds coaches to the list of professionals, including physicians, social workers, and day care providers who are required to report any signs of child abuse.

While the list had already included teachers, it was not clear as to whether or not they rule applied to sports coaches paid by the school district.  Governor Cuomo’s new legislation eliminates any misinterpretation of the law and requires coaches to undergo training on how to recognize the signs of abuse.

Since coaches are often in a unique position of trust with children, supporters of the bill hope that this will help in reporting any suspected cases.  Read more about the new legislation here.
